Summer/Fall Slow Grow (Journeyman) League

Hey guys, this summer/fall Brendon, one of the local PGs will be running a Slow Grow Journeyman League with painting starting in the middle of June and games starting in Mid July. I will be heading up running this event at Huzzah which will tie in with the one Brendon is running at the Chantilly Game Parlor so there will be more nights and more place for people to get in games. Please see below for the rules and post if you would be interested in joining us.

Slow Grow (Journeyman) League

Purpose:
Slow Grow leagues can have several purposes, depending on where one is in the hobby.

  • Get new players into the game. By being a slowly escalating league, players have the chance to spread out purchases over several weeks. They also have a chance to focus on a small core of models for a while before expanding into more complicated armies and strategies.
  • Get existing players into a new faction. Similar to above, there comes a time when players want a change of scenery. Slow Grows are pefect for this for the same reasons it's great for new players. Buying and learning a new faction take time, and the slow grow forces players to slow down, focus on a limited set of models, and really learn them before expanding.
  • Paint your stuff! It's no secret that many gamers need motivation to paint their models. This slow grow is specifically designed to enforce strict painting requirements while still allowing casual players to enjoy their existing armies.

Dates:
The slow grow painting begins June 16th.
Gameplay begins July 16th.
The league ends on October 7th.

Location:
The league will be played at Game Parlor in Chantilly, as well as Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn. Games played in any publicly available space (libraries, other game stores, etc) are valid as well. No games played in people's houses or basements, etc will be counted.

Schedule:
The painting for the league starts 1 month before gameplay is allowed. This is done so that participants may begin playing with a painted force, as well as seek advice from veterans of their new faction and get some practice games in before being "thrown into the fire", so to speak.

Once gameplay begins, there will be two (2) weeks at the 9-11pt "Battlebox" level. Then there will be two (2) weeks at 15 pts, two (2) weeks at 25 and the final two (2) weeks will be 35pts.

Painting Rules:
All models used in a game must be painted. "Painted" models consist of at least 3 colors, and an attempt at shading and/or highlights. While a "good" paint job is not a requisite, part of this hobby is the "craft" of assembly and painting. Primer will not suffice. Models do not need to be based.

Painting models will earn you points. These points are not awarded until the painted model is used in a game. Here is the point breakdown:
Small based models: 1 pt
Medium based models: 2 pts
Large based points: 3pts
Battle Engines: 5pts
Collosals: 9pts

*Warcasters will earn double points*

Points are earned based on the size number of models. There is no discounting for units, there is no adjustment for character models. The more you paint, the more points you get.

Models do not need to be painted during the league. You may use models you painted previously. They simply will not earn you any painting points.

Painting Contests:
There will be a painting Competition at the 15pt army level on July 28. Pictures of the models must be submitted before Noon on the day of the competition. Voting will happen online and will be open to the general public, and voting will run for a week.
There will be a painting Competition at the 35pt army level on October 8. Pictures of the models must be submitted before Noon on the day of the competition. Voting will happen online and will be open to the general public, and voting will run for a week.

Gameplay Rules:
Games played must be played with fully painted armies. If you wish to play a game with a model, youmust use a painted model.

Games will be scored based on the following scale(games played at the BB level will count as 15 pt games).

You may play games of any size throughout the 8 weeks that gameplay is allowed. Games of the designated size for the week will be worth 1 extra point per player. So, if a battlebox game is played in Weeks 1 or 2, that game earns players one additional game play point, as if they had played a 25pt game instead. By doing this, players are not restricted to small games if they do not want to play them, and those that do adhere to the schedule are rewarded appropriately.

The first three games played each week will be scored, in order to offer a competitive edge to those so inclined. There are still benefits to playing more than three games, however: earning points for newly painted models, earning achievement points, and helping other players get their games in.

Achievements:
There will be several achievements that can be earned throughout the league. Painting achievements award painting points, game achievements award game points.

Paint 3 Warcasters: 3pt
Paint a small based full unit + UA (12 models): 5 pts
Paint a medium based full unit (5 models): 5pts
Paint 5 Warnouns: 5pts

Play one game at each of the following sizes: 15, 25, 35, 50: 3pts
Play two games of at least 35pts with no shared models: 5pts
Play against 10 different opponents: 5pts
Play two team games: 5pts

Awards:
The player with the most Hobby Points will be crowned the Master Craftsman.
The player with the most Game Points will be crowned the Master Strategist.
The player with the most Hobby + Game Points will be crowned the League Champion.
These three awards are mutually exclusive. If someone qualifies for more than one award, they may chose the one they would like.

Each of the above awards will have a prize pack. Each Painting Competition will also have a prize.

Raffle:
At the end of the League, a Battle Engine or Colossal (depending on what we can get donated) will be raffled off. Everyone participating in the league is eligible, and may earn tickets for the raffle according to the following rules:

June 16th - July 15th:
Earn tickets for painting models, awarded at 1 ticket per point (based on model size), maximum of of 5 tickets per week.

July 16th - October 7th:
1 ticket per week for playing a game at the week's game size.
1 ticket per game played against a different opponent, max of 3
1 ticket per week for painting something new.

A winner will randomly be drawn on Friday, October 12th, and will either be videotaped and put online, OR will be done live at one of the stores.

Reporting Games & Bonus Points

At the end of each week players are require to report up to 3 games and any bonus points earned during the week.  There are 2 ways to do that:

  1. By logging into http://Ordonova.coda.net, scrolling down to the Warmachine/Hordes section of the forum, clicking on Warmachine/Hordes General, and then posting their scores in the ‘Not-Gnarls’ Weekly Scores Thread for the appropriate week.
  2. By Emailing jpowell37@gmail.com with game scores and bonus points earned.

Additionally, a blog has been setup for the league where I will be posting up the scores at the end of each week (I will also be posting them at Huzzah Hobbies, and on the Ordo Nova Forums) plus any additional content I come across.  You can find the blog at: http://warmahordesathuzzah.blogspot.com.

Any participant who wishes to be added as an author to post battle reports and any other content, please send an email to jpowell37@gmail.com and I will give you author rights.
